Launched in 2004, two China-Montreux Energy Roundtables have been successfully held so far in Beijing, China.

The theme of China-Montreux Energy Roundtable 2006 is “Improving Energy Efficiency, Developing Cleaner and More Effective Energy”.

China-Montreux Energy Roundtable 2006 is prepared on the basis of two previous successful events. A total of more than 300 celebrities from the energy community and related industries both at home and abroad are expected to attend the Roundtable, at which they will discuss a string of challenging issues, such as global energy supply and demand, enhancement of energy efficiency, clean and effective energy, energy investment and market, energy saving, as well as environmental protection.

The previous two Roundtables were attended by the celebrities, high-ranking governmental officials, and senior managers from the domestic and international energy communities as well as experts from the energy research institutions, including the following keynote speakers: the Executive Director of International Energy Agency (IEA) Mr. Claude Mandil, the Deputy Executive Director of IEA Mr. William C. Ramsay, the Secretary General of International Energy Forum (IEF) Mr. Amb Arne Walther, and the Vice Chairman of China's National Development & Reform Commission Mr. Zhang Guobao. The Chinese and foreign energy communities have made strong response to the achievements of the two Roundtables. Based on the expectations and the demand of the participants, the third event, China-Montreux Energy Roundtable 2006 and China International Energy Exposition 2006 are scheduled to be held between November 5 and 7, 2006.

Introduction of related background

•  Montreux Energy Roundtable

Founded in Montreux, Switzerland, in 1990, Montreux Energy Roundtable is a famous energy forum at a high level. So far, 17 Montreux Roundtables have been organized. Since developed in the United States in 1944, 10 Aspen Clean Energy Roundtables have been held. It also created Global New Energy Roundtable in Cambridge, the UK, in 1998, which has been held for eight conferences. Over the past 17 years, this forum has attracted more than 2000 senior executives and experts from the fields of petroleum, natural gas, electric power, coal industry, nuclear energy, auto, consultancy, finance and insurance worldwide as well as leaders from the governments and international organizations for common discussions of the strategic issues, such as energy production and consumption, investment and development, and new energy development. The forum has also drawn support from International Energy Agency (IEA), Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), World Bank (WB), World Energy Council (WEC) as well as some giant multinational companies and national oil companies. With the sustainable growth in China's economy and the gradual increase of nation's international influence, Montreux Energy anticipated to cooperate with China for the common efforts to strengthen the study of energy strategy in the Asian region and shape a global forum network covering Americas, Europe and Asia.

•  China-Montreux Energy Roundtable

Mr. Richard Mckean, founder and President of Montreux Energy Roundtable, has repeatedly contacted Chinese National Committee for World Petroleum Council in an attempt to host an energy roundtable conference in partnership with China since he attended the 15 th World Petroleum Congress in Beijing in October 1997.

The energy issue is an important strategic issue related to the economic development, social progress and national security. China is both a major energy producer and a major energy consumer in the world. China has maintained a sustainable and rapid economic development with a strong momentum for energy demand growth. To alleviate the contradiction between energy supply and economic development, the Chinese government has formulated the guidelines of basing itself on the domestic resources, substantially boosting the energy utilization efficiency, and “the equal emphasizes placed on energy development and saving with the priority given to energy saving.” China has promulgated “Renewable Energy Law” and come up with the “Long and Medium-term Special Energy Saving Plans” and the energy saving objectives for the 11 th Five-Year Plan period. To achieve these purposes, the first conference of “China-Montreux Energy Roundtable was held at Grand Hyatt Hotel in Beijing from April 21 to 23, 2004. Based on the success of the first event and the strong demand of the participants, “China-Montreux Energy Roundtable 2005” was held at Kaminski Hotel in Beijing from November 13 to 15, 2005 under the guidance of the Energy Bureau of China's National Development and Reform Commission. To collaborate with this conference, “China International Energy Expo 2005” was held at China International Exhibition Center in Beijing at the same time. Both conference and exhibition were great successes.

To promote construction of the conservation-oriented society in China, expand international exchange and strengthen international cooperation in the energy field, “China-Montreux Energy Roundtable 2006” and “China International Energy Expo 2006” will be held in Beijing on November 5-7, 2006 under the guidance of the Energy Bureau of China's National Development & Reform Commission. The Roundtable and the Exhibition aim at promoting the global energy dialogue and cooperation, making the common efforts for maintenance of energy security and energy market stability, and creating an adequate, safe, economical and clean energy environment for the global economic growth.
